However, gaming’s reliance on social capital to sustain gameplay has negative consequences for individuals who are not careful. A recent study found that online gaming can lead to addiction and even psychological dependency in some individuals.

The study evaluated a sample of German residents using a standard computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) survey. The participants were asked about their involvement in online video game play and the extent to which they had made gaming-related friendships. In order to assess modality switching, whereby gaming-related friendships are linked to other interpersonal relationships through different communication channels, the participants were also asked about the number of online friends they had not met offline (ONF only) and the number of friends they knew from daily life who had transferred into online environments (Offline friends transferred to ONF).

The study found that in-game socialization is a strong predictor of online gaming friending. The relationship is moderated by alienation, suggesting that the positive impact of in-game social interaction may be offset by a sense of isolation from the virtual space.
